My ‘yarn of the month’ blog has been temporarily yarn-bombed by Jubilee Bunting, so this month I will focus on an update rather than a particular yarn.
Firstly, thank you to everyone for your support with the Jubilee Project so far. We asked for bunting and you responded immediately! Over 150 knit and crochet patterns have gone out into the community and well over 1,000 triangles have come back to the shop.
You’ve donated yarn to help others get involved; bought yarn (thank you!) and used up your stash. We’ve heard stories of how these simple patterns have helped people to get back into knitting and crochet and of others who have learned to knit and crochet to enable them to take part. Children from the local primary school have also been making pom-poms.
Our ‘Knit n Knatter’ and workshop groups have been involved and there is a strong sense of community spirit developing – people are talking about it, and enjoying being part of something larger which benefits the whole community. Whether it’s relaxing and enjoying the well-being benefits of repetitive knitting and crochet (I think I could string them together in my sleep now!) or volunteering to help in other ways, it has truly brought us together.
As the submission deadline approaches, please ensure you have dropped off your bunting by Friday 6th May, to enable them to be strung together in time for the installation afternoon, and don’t forget to collect your unique number (raffle ticket) to be entered into our ‘Jubilee June Prize Give Away’. Tickets will be drawn by a representative from the local parish council during the installation afternoon.
Our partner local artisans and customers have very generously donated items for this draw as a way of thanking the community for taking part.
So to recap:
Friday 6th May: submission deadline.
Sunday 29th May: Installation afternoon 1pm – 5pm. Volunteers are very welcome! Meet at the shop or on the Vicarage Field at 1pm. Please bring a pair of scissors with you. We will be tying the bunting to the fence (rather than using cable ties) to reduce plastic waste. You will be given a ball of yarn for this.
Oh! I almost forgot to mention that it’s now an official event on the Platinum Jubilee website. Yikes! You can read more about it here.
We certainly know how to celebrate in Sankey!
It would be lovely to see as many of you as possible on Sunday 29th, but please don’t worry if you can’t make it.
All that remains for me to say now is THANK YOU once again for your overwhelming support for this, our first community project, and I hope you all enjoy seeing your work proudly displayed in your community space.
Don’t forget to look out for our postbox toppers too (outside Ashton’s Estate Agent and Honiton Way)
Well done to you all from Diane and the team xx
PS: I’ve already been asked what our next community yarn-bombing project will be and I have a few things in mind – so watch this space (squares, if you’re looking for something to be working on – mitered, garter, instarsia, granny, and we’ll get some patterns together soon!)
